As many of us found out during covid lockdowns, sometimes working out at home may be your best—and only—option. Fortunately, you don’t need a fully equipped home gym to stay active. Take yoga, for example. All you really need are comfortable clothes and a mat.
If that sounds like something you’d like to try, here are seven quick tips to help you get started with yoga at home.
1. Find a Comfortable Space
Before you begin your yoga practice, find a quiet, comfortable spot in your home.
If you live with others, try to choose an area with minimal foot traffic to help you focus. A clutter-free space allows for better movement and concentration, so take a moment to tidy up before you begin.
2. Gather Your Yoga Gear
Once you’ve settled into your space, it’s time to gather your gear.
Strictly speaking, yoga doesn’t require any equipment—your body is enough. However, having a few tools can enhance your practice and motivate you to stay consistent.
At minimum, a yoga mat is recommended. Additional items like blocks, straps, cushions, or yoga-specific clothing are entirely optional, depending on your comfort and preferences.
3. Choose a Convenient Time
Morning is often considered ideal for yoga, as it helps you wake up your body and prepare for the day ahead. But there’s no rule saying you must do it early.
Choose a time that works best for your schedule. Whether it’s to energize in the morning or unwind in the evening, consistency matters more than timing.
4. Wear Comfortable Clothing
You don’t need expensive or trendy yoga attire to get started. Any clothes that let you move freely and absorb sweat will do just fine.
Avoid letting social media’s portrayal of “yoga fashion” influence your choices—comfort is key.
5. Practice on an Empty Stomach
Avoid doing yoga right after eating. Practicing on a full stomach can be uncomfortable and distracting.
Ideally, do your session on an empty stomach or wait at least 1–2 hours after a meal.
6. Explore Different Yoga Styles
Modern yoga takes many forms, and not every style will suit your needs or preferences.
You don’t need to be on a quest for enlightenment to enjoy the benefits of yoga. Try different approaches—Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, Kundalini—and see what feels right for you.
7. Consider Online Yoga Classes
If you’re new to yoga, consider joining an online class to receive guided instruction. It can help you learn proper poses, breathing techniques, and meditation basics.
You might enroll in a structured online course, work with a wellness coach, or join a virtual group class for a more social experience. Either way, having guidance can make your practice safer and more effective.
Whether you prefer a minimalist approach or go all-in with branded gear, what truly matters is your consistency and respect for the practice. Yoga is for everyone—just start where you are.
