Where are you in your yoga journey?

Sewall House meets you at your level. Donna (Amrita) has been teaching individuals and groups many different forms of yoga since 1985 in various settings (since 1997 in winter months) in New York City. She treats each student as the individual they are. Our other staff teachers also give the students their personal attention as needed. Everyone at Sewall House Yoga Retreat embraces the yoga lifestyle, just as our historic ancestral home embraces you.
Are you going through life changes?
Since Sewall House opened in 1997 it has attracted people going through changes and challenges — whether professional, personal or with their health. The tools we provide at Sewall House are uniquely tailored so you can incorporate them into your life once you get back home. A healthy lifestyle is about the choices we make and the habits we create. While it can be challenging, healthy change is possible. We help motivate you to discover these tools, which result in you feeling more aware, alive and effective.

Every guest at Sewall House has their own private bedroom
Sewall House has only 6 Guest Bedrooms. Couples and friends are welcome to share beds, but you won’t have a roommate that you don’t know! Each bedroom is uniquely furnished to welcome, invite, and embrace you in our home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. All our rooms have modern upgrades for your comfort, and two have private baths.
Are you looking for more than a yoga retreat? Sewall House offers wellness in other areas

Forest Bathing, also known as shinrin-yoku, is a Japanese practice that involves spending time in nature, particularly forests, to promote relaxation and well-being. Sewall House is in Maine, where 89% of the land is still forested. Our town of Island Falls has pristine lakes, waterfalls, rivers, and woods. Many studies show that forest bathing helps with anxiety and depression as well as, or better than drugs! This is the same nature that healed a young future President, Theodore Roosevelt, who often visited visit Sewall House to spend time with his friend William Sewall, who is the great-grandfather of Sewall House’s current owner-operator Donna Davidge. Young Theodore Roosevelt reported that he felt a part of the Sewall family immediately upon his first arrival. Many of our guests say the same. Donna respects and upholds this legacy of healing and hospitality.
Meditation and Mindfulness are how we start the day. Every morning we have a quiet sitting meditation — and, yes, you can lie down if you prefer — at 7:30 am. (Coffee is served starting at 6:00 am, if you want it.) Are you new to meditation? This is a great kickoff. Are you accustomed to listening to guided meditations through a headset? Let us teach you how to meditate with your own inner voice. You’ll learn the strength in silence, and we’ll share specific techniques you can take with you anywhere.

Let us help you create your Schedule Daily. In addition to meditation, 3 meals a day, and 2 yoga classes (morning and evening) — everything is optional; participate as you feel on any given day — Sewall House offers in-house massage, reiki, sauna, porch sitting, and a one-person jacuzzi. Nearby kayaks offer you an opportunity to experience tranquil Mattawamkeag Lake, where you will often hear a loon or see a bald eagle overhead. You can be as busy or un-busy as you like.
Our Retreats are Sober. Your time at Sewall House offers time to cleanse and detox. You are even welcome to hand your phone to us when you arrive if you feel the need to disconnect.
The atmosphere of Island Falls is Friendly and Quiet. The Mattawamkeag River winds through town and there are miles of wooded areas to explore. You can spend a day reading and journaling. You can spend a day exploring the miles of wooded areas we have. You can walk up May Mountain to a beautiful view of Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest peak. If you want to engage in activities at the nearby state parks, or if you prefer to hike up Mount Chase, or visit Shin Falls, you can do that on your own, or we have special outings available.
The price of our rooms — all of them private — includes lodging, food, and all yoga and meditation activities.
I stayed at Sewall House and had an amazing time. I’ve done several retreats over the years, but this one stood out for several reasons. One, the hospitality and caring that Donna and Ajeet put into the experience can be described as loving kindness. Both were extremely flexible with anything I wanted to do with no judgement. Two, the house is lovely and very welcoming. The cats and dog were friendly to the point one of the cats snuggled in with me for naps. Three, the food was simple and good with plenty of it. I never felt hungry. Fourth, the towns people are very welcoming to the point that I think I met most of them. They all had a great sense of humor and care about their town, improving it for future generations, and the environment. If you are looking for simplicity, nature, peace, and kind people then this is the place for you. I will definitely be back. Loved it all!

Although I was only able to stay for 4 nights and not my ideal 7, I got SO much out of my stay! I needed a release & reset and Donna and Ajeet saw me through with tailored yoga, connected conversation, delightful outings to hike and kayak and delicious food! I was even able to get a massage and sauna in 🙂 I don’t know what I would do without this place and these 2 amazing women… so grateful <3<3 Maine Magic <3<3

Sewall House Yoga Retreat was such a magical place and experience for the soul. Donna and Ajeet really welcomed me with open arms and hearts and made me feel so special and well taken care of. I initially chose this retreat because I wanted to explore Maine and needed a place that would be vegan friendly. The food was great, the charming historic house made you feel right at home, and the surrounding town of Island Falls offered many beautiful nature hikes within walking distance of the house. I had little to no prior experience with yoga/meditation, but both Donna and Ajeet took time to explain and walk me through each process. I found the daily classes so enjoyable and inspiring! I left with a newfound love of the practices and outlook on life.
