Wellness at Home: 8 Tips for Creating Meditation Space at Home

Posted on April 7, 2021
home meditation space

Your home should always be a place where you can experience tranquility in the middle of the hustle and bustle. For that reason, you fill your home with objects you love, colors that give you peace, and photos that recall happy memories.

With that in mind, why not alson dedicate a special corner of your home to getting rid of stressful emotions? Meditation, focusing on your breath and clearing your mind, is a great way to accomplish that.

You can significantly improve your meditation practice by creating a calming meditative environment. This includes including thoughtful details in your meditation space, allowing you to achieve peace without going to a yoga studio.

In this post, we will share eight helpful tips on how you can create a meditation space at home:

1. Create a special corner

You do not need an entire bedroom to create your own meditation space. In fact, any corner will do. This could either be the main area in your home or an empty corner. You can even create one outdoors, in your backyard or garden.

The next things you should think about are the objects and images that will fit that space. We recommend that you take a minimalist approach when decorating your meditation space.

You can fill it with candles, bowls, cushions, lights, and some relaxing greenery.

To add more softness, you can even throw in a couple of blankets and pillows. Remember to choose something you think will be meaningful to you or set this particular area of your home apart.

2. Use a relaxing color palette

Apart from the physical objects that you want to incorporate in your space, it would help if you also opted for a relaxing color palette in your room.

Ideally, you want to paint your room based on what type of mood that you want to achieve.

Some people may opt for more pastel colors over bright and dark shades since they need to be more relaxing. But others will feel more secure or cocooned with darker hues.

Colors tend to affect your overall mood. You can decide which colors will make you feel more calm, relaxed, and at ease.

3. Let natural light in

In the same way, meditation will make you feel a lot better if you let in some sunlight in your skin or the soft breeze coming through a window.

When creating your meditation space, try to place it near a window. Remember that lighting plays a crucial role in our mood. Therefore, think about what kind of light will allow you to focus more.

You may want to pick a space that focuses on the sun, where you can make the most out of the gorgeous light from dawn or dusk.

4. Keep it clean and uncluttered

Meditation and clutter do not mix well. It can be challenging to rest in a cluttered space, making it almost impossible to find the peace you need. That said, ensure that you make any “extras” you add to a minimum. This includes not setting up your meditation space in the busiest part of your home.

In fact, you may consider keeping your meditation space to only a few elements, like maybe your yoga mat, a throw rug, a meditation pillow, and a small table.

5. Add some greenery

Bringing in some nature into your space is one of the best ways to relax and heal your soul. Try to incorporate natural elements in your space that allow you to relax and meditate.

After all, meditation is all about connecting the mind and body with nature and your surroundings. Although meditating in a natural environment is calming, it is not always possible. This is especially true if you live in a city. So in your meditation space, try incorporating touches of nature to create a harmonious environment. Then add natural elements like plants.

Adding a plant or two improves the overall air quality in your home. Plants also connect you to the natural world, making your space more inviting.

6. Make your space sacred

By “sacred”, we do not mean adding something religious or spiritual. Sacred here means apart and dedicated — special. Not a place where you need to move a lot of stuff around to make it usable every time you want to meditate.

Also, part of the sacred nature of your meditative space is that it inspires stillness. It should be a place where you can carve out some time for yourself and your practice. It should be a space where you can rest, practice meditation or yoga, or just have some quiet time.

When you are meditating, it’s best to get away from it all, so leave your phone behind. Creating a rule that “no phones are allowed” in your meditation space is a must-do. The last thing you want to hear while meditating is a distracting “ping” from text messages, emails, or calls.

7. Use aromatherapy

Another element you may want to infuse in your meditation space, or in your home in general, is aromatherapy. Essential oils from plants, peppermint, lavender, and chamomile help soothe the mind, body, and soul.

Burning incense, candles, or heating oils can when you meditate will provide better relaxation, and it also comes with other benefits. Aromatherapy stimulates brain function, boosts the immune system, eases muscle tension, and relieves stress, so incorporating aromatherapy into your meditation space is a good idea.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Pets may be affected by some aromas. If you have pets, please check with a reliable resource before you introduce scents into the spaces where they live.

8. Cut the background noises

If you live in an urban area or have a big family, you can play some soothing music or white noise to eliminate these distractions. You may even consider soundproofing your meditation area. Finding a way to eliminate outside noise will allow you to be in a more tranquil and calm state of mind while meditating.

Conclusion

By incorporating the 8 tips above, you can create a meditative space in your home — no matter how busy your location is. That way, you can detach yourself from your thoughts and still your mind after a long day if you have your own personal meditation space.
