Sewall House is Nurturing and Nourishing, not Pampering

By Donna Amrita Davidge, owner and operator of Sewall House Yoga Retreat

These days I often see hotels and resorts offering wellness and yoga retreats as an added feature. Well, ever since Sewall House opened in 1997, we have made wellness and yoga retreats our sole focus. In fact, Sewall House is a dedicated wellness and yoga retreat center.

Our tagline from the start has been “Simplicity In a Complex World” because Sewall House — originally my great-grandfather’s home, built in 1865 — had housed my ancestors whose lives seemed simpler than mine. As the digital world changed how we all function, speeding things up and taking our attention in directions we had never previously imagined, our tagline became more and more relevant.

We set ourselves apart from other similar places by providing a haven for healing through nurturing and nourishing our guests. With only six private guest bedrooms, Sewall House, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its strong ties to Theodore Roosevelt, is as individualized in its unique offering as is each guest we welcome.

Sewall House Provides a Nurturing and Nourishing Environment

NURTURE – to care for and encourage development

NOURISH – to provide an environment necessary for growth, health, and good condition

Some comments from recent guests made me realize that Sewall House’s strength lies in allowing people to feel safe physically — both in yoga classes and out in nature — and mentally, as well as emotionally.

Kara: “A great option for the female solo traveler.”

Janice: “I felt loved and cared for from the moment I arrived!”

Jenine: “Feels like coming home.”

Our dedication to serving our guests has not changed since we started in 1997. Our service is the same. Our caring has not changed. Our desire to make your time with us special and transformational is as strong now as ever.

The members of the Sewall House team have a diverse, highly experienced background in helping others via the tools of yoga, meditation, healing modalities like Reiki, and a love of sharing the healing attributes of the natural setting where Sewall House is located. The beauty of northern Maine is all around us. We have a seven-mile lake where we kayak, stand-up paddleboard, and do yoga. We have trails where we go on hikes, wood walks, and experience waterfalls. Baxter State Park and Katahdin Woods and Waters, only about an hour away, offer even more opportunities for pristine nature experiences.

We also all enjoy sharing delicious home-cooked meals along with a time of sharing, while our private bedrooms offer the much needed solitude a yoga retreat requires.

Yoga classes are individualized and small, with care and attention to each guest.

We Don’t Pamper You

We leave the pampering to the larger more corporate settings. Instead we offer to nurture and nourish each guest who comes through our doors. And we throw in a little extra TLC from our in-house pets.

In addition, the workshops and special retreats give guests a chance to learn new things, offer a beautiful way to  open yourself from the heart and soul, not just from the head.

In 2024 we are offering a workshop for guests to learn more about their chakras — the body’s energy centers — and how they affect our physical and mental health.

Also in 2024 we’ll offer a Writing and Yoga Retreat for budding or experienced authors, a Raja Yoga Retreat to examine more closely the mental aspect of yoga, and our always popular Women’s Mental Health Retreat, as well as a Vegan Cooking Workshop.

Please take a look at all our upcoming workshops and special retreats.

Book Your Personal Yoga Retreat Based on Your Schedule

One of the more unique offers we have for guests is our Daily Schedule, which allows guests to book time with us whenever they are available to create their own personal yoga retreat! We will work with you at your level with two yoga classes daily, one meditation in the morning, and three wonderful vegetarian meals each day, much of it locally sourced. Schedule three days or a week or two (or three) and enjoy a personalized yoga retreat with us.

Book your retreat now and enjoy a time of truly being nurtured and nourished with us and our caring team.

We know you have a lot of choices. Schedule your personal yoga retreat at Sewall House to find out why our guests choose us.
