Photography Workshop / The Creative Process

Come to peaceful Maine to improve your vision and focus. This course is about unlocking your personal creativity to take your photography to the next level—and have fun doing so.

We will explore different photography styles, themes, approaches and look back at photographers who have influenced us.

You will begin assignments to help open up your eyes, shooting with everything from iPhones to DSLR. It’s not about the equipment, it’s about how you see the world.

Frédéric Silberman

Frédéric Silberman is a partner at S&H design in Burlington, Vermont. He has been working in print design & commercial, portrait & fine art photography for over 35 years and is currently represented by GalleryB in Castine, Maine.


What to bring

  • Whatever you use to shoot photos — your digital camera, iPad, smartphone, anything with a camera. Keep in mind that for in-workshop participation, we’ll need to be able to see your photographs, so a traditional film camera is not recommended.
  • A journal or notepad
  • An open mind

Photography workshop schedule



  • High Octane coffee and a variety of teas, including Yogi tea


  • Silent meditation

8:00 – 9:30am

  • Meditation and Yoga – Restorative or Hatha or more active Vinyasa-Ashtanga


  • Breakfast, including homemade granola, oatmeal, fruit, nut butters, homemade bread, Yogi tea, and coffee. Eggs or pancakes most weekends.

10:30 – 11:30am

  • FREE TIME – Reading, journaling, biking, walking, hiking, massage, lake activities

11:30 – 1:00pm

  • Day 1: Introductions, Discuss expectations and goals, Show a few of your favorite photographs (either taken by you or by someone you admire), You will be given your first assignment to complete during the afternoon
  • After Day 1: Topic lecture / discussion talk, Review previous assignments


  • Mid-day meal. Dine in or, for an additional fee, we can prepare lunch to take with you on an outing.

3:30 – 5:30pm

  • Day 1: Free time to shoot photographs in and around beautiful Island Falls, Maine (work on your assignment of the day)
  • After Day 1: Each day you will work on a different photographic assignment to help you explore new avenues in the area. This will also be an opportunity for you to discover this often overlooked, beautiful part of Maine.

5:30 – 7:00pm

  • Yoga – Kundalini or Yin or Restorative or Svaroopa


  • Vegetarian Dinner & Dessert

8:00 – 10:30pm

  • Sauna & Jacuzzi or just relax!

Final assessment

  • On the last day of the workshop, your photographs and progress will be reviewed during a one-on-one session with Frédéric to help guide you on your journey.

Topics during the photography workshop may include but are not limited to (depending on your interest):

  • Editing your work: read, understand it, and indications of where you can develop your vision and interests
  • Process: inspiration and historical context
  • Photographers Mind Eye versus what the Lens Sees and the disconnect we photographers encounter
  • Why the image is absolute
  • The language of photography: verbal vs visual differences and fluency
    The syntax of a visual dialogue – shape, culture, color
  • Limitations and How They Open Doors
    Unlocking personal creativity
  • Technique – How to Attain Fluency
  • Advantages and Limitations of a Digital World
  • Awareness and Selectivity: Critical elements to good photography
  • Approaching Themes to improve your Work.
  • On Approaching subjects
  • Different types and genres of photography will be discussed: examining the work of other photographers
    Documentary, Portrait, Lifestyle, Landscape, Conceptual, Personal, Narrative, Fine Art

Portrait session with Frédéric included

  • Each participant will have a portrait session included as part of their workshop.
