Lost in Control: A Writing/Yoga Workshop

October 10, 2024 @ 5:00 pm October 15, 2024 @ 11:00 am

Writing and Yoga Workshop

Join us for a unique writing workshop fueled with Kundalini yoga and the inspirational surroundings of Island Falls, Maine. Explore the need for control, the illusion that we have it, the consequences of getting lost in it, and the ways out of the labyrinth.

The need for control always comes from someone that has lost it.

–Shannon L. Alder, author & therapist

Combining readings, writing prompts, and meditation, along with Jon Kabat-Zinn’s attitudes of mindfulness, we will go deep into our understanding of what makes us want control and how to let it go.

Yoga is especially relevant to creativity because of the spiritual aspects of the practice. When you consider that the practice of yoga originated from that need for the individual to somehow unite with the universe, how can we not proceed to harness that energy for creative thought? Yoga provides that pathway to creativity thought to make it particularly helpful to the writer.

Your life is a sacred journey. It is about change, growth, discovery, movement, transformation, continuously expanding your vision of what is possible, stretching your soul, learning to see clearly and deeply, listening to your intuition, taking courageous challenges at every step along the way. You are on the path… exactly where you are meant to be right now… And from here, you can only go forward, shaping your life story into a magnificent tale of triumph, of healing, of courage, of beauty, of wisdom, of power, of dignity, and of love.

-Caroline Joy Adams, Author

Do I need prior writing experience?
No, you do not need prior writing experience. The workshop is open to all who want to explore journaling or writing from a creative heart-space, regardless of writing experience.

How long is the workshop?
Plan to arrive on Thursday evening, so you can have Friday as an ease in and preparation day. The actual writing workshop is three days, with Maria teaching Saturday through Monday from 11:00am to 2:00pm each day. You may depart Tuesday morning, although in the past many students plan to to depart on Wednesday morning so they have an extra writing day at the retreat.

Is the usual daily yoga retreat schedule available to workshop participants?
Yes. In addition to the writing workshop, each day offers, included in the price of accommodations, a morning meditation, two yoga classes, and three vegetarian meals. There is also plenty of time to continue writing on your own and to explore other local activities.

What is the format of the workshop?
There is one short and one longer writing exercise. Each is preceded by a Kundalini yoga set and/or meditation. Each day covers a different writing topic.

Which topics are covered?
In the past, we have discussed topics such as: creating a writing routine, the editor and the generative voice, overcoming procrastination, lifting from descriptive scenes to reflection, and character development.

Will I have the opportunity to share my writing with fellow participants?
Yes. You will have time to share your writing. Though it is optional, many participants choose to share, as the space we create together is a safe and supportive one.

Is a private consult available with the writing instructor?
Yes. One-on-one sessions are included. Writers may submit up to five pages in advance and receive feedback. The private session can also be used to discuss your writing aspirations, routines that work, getting published, or other areas of interest.

This writing & yoga workshop runs Saturday-Monday. To reap the full benefits of your retreat we recommend a five- or six-night stay to enjoy a relaxing day of yoga when you arrive and an extra day of writing in a retreat setting before you depart.

Be sure to select “Writing Workshop” as an “Extra” when you book.
