As summer approaches and many States ease slowly back into activity, Maine lends itself to being outdoors, one of the things our yoga retreat offers in great variety in addition to your yoga experience. These activities lend themselves to social distancing as we still maneuver the waters of Covid 19 with a variety of activities in the great outdoors.
A mile down the road from the yoga retreat house is the magnificent Mattawamkeag Lake, where our Stand Up Paddleboards and kayaks can be taken out onto this vast pristine lake. We also offer boat rides in our fishing boat to Bible Point at the end of the lake, a beautiful trip along the five miles or more of the entire lake, breathtaking views all the way, where a college student named Theodore Roosevelt had hiked to read his Bible amidst the inspiration of the mossy shore, large tree roots overhanging the river and the gurgle of the brook that led into the riverway..including wildlife spottings like eagles and more if you keep your eyes alert. And if weather permits we can detour over to Loon Ledge, for a truly magnificent yoga experience of Kundalini Yoga in the afternoon on a huge rock ledge, with a swim definitely in order.
Our yoga retreat also offers simple bicycles for outings around town. If you are an avid athletic bicyclist we advise you bring your own bicycle for the amazing thirty mile loop with a scenic overlook halfway through the ride, a beautiful pause to inspire the eyes, heart and soul.
Our bikes accommodate the seven mile loop on the Belvedere Road, with beautiful fields and a view of majestic Mount Katahdin along the way.
Beyond the cross ventilation offered from the French doors in our sweet attached yoga studio, we have a small yoga platform in our backyard to for our tiny yoga groups to practice in the fresh air. Morning meditation is offered a two minute walk from the yoga retreat, overlooking the river that runs through and around town. There is also has a sweet walking path along the river across the street from Sewall House Yoga Retreat.
Depending on the season, you might find our guests out strawberrying with us in July or picking blueberries, the big juicy ones, at the nearby blueberry farm that hosts a magnificent view of Mount Katahdin, in August. The reward of course is eating the berries fresh or eating an amazing dessert our chef has created with them.
Right next to the blueberry farm is the horseback riding facility, Bog Brook Farm, where you can have a nice trail ride for an hour at a very reasonable price. The fall foliage can be an especially wonderful time to do this, as well as hike nearby Katahdin Woods and Water National Monument or the wilderness park, Baxter State Park, which offers a huge amount of day hikes, small or large. However summer is a super time to hike or horseback ride in between yoga classes as well. We recommend after the month of June, when the pesty mosquitoes have passed. June is a beautiful month, however, if a few bugs do not bother you. And a little wind takes care of the problem! July and August are great months in Maine to enjoy summer weather while escaping the oppressive heat of some parts of the country and world, or simply wanting another pace in our Americana town of less than 800 people.
If you have a car you can take a jaunt to local Amish store about fifteen minutes down a beautiful country road, then continue on the back road to the town of Houlton, three miles from the Canadian border, which offers the most amazing ice cream ever at the old fashioned Houlton Dairy bar. If you like chocolate, their chocolate ice cream is divine (for the nonvegans in the crowd).
Besides our daily yoga and meditation classes, one can definitely spend time social distancing on our wrap around porch or in our hammock.
Each guest has a private room (double occupancy for those who want to share a bed) at the yoga retreat as well, with yoga classes tailored to your needs and level, as the yoga retreat offers at least a half dozen forms of yoga, from gentle to challenging, whatever your need may be. Our yoga offering is influenced by Dharmayoga, Iyengar, Ashtanga and Kundalini. We also offer yoga nidra and restorative/ yin yoga forms as well.
And if your honey comes along and prefers golf to yoga, we have a course here in Island Falls as well, Vajowa.
