5 Ways to Improve Your Senior Years (including Yoga!)

Posted on July 14, 2022

As you age, it can become more challenging to look after your physical and mental health. However, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says that people over 65 should enjoy at least 150 minutes of exercise per week to boost physical and mental health benefits.

Here’s are 5 ways seniors can meet the CDC’s exercise target and improve their mental health.

1. Start Your Own Business

Many seniors are starting companies to give them greater free time and financial freedom, which means more time to concentrate on physical and mental health. Consider forming an LLC, which offers many benefits, including:

  • Tax flexibility. An LLC provides you with many tax advantages.
  • Personal liability protection. You won’t threaten your financial assets when you form an LLC because of the personal liability protection
  • Affordability. Forming an LLC is not costly, especially compared to other company structures.
  • Less paperwork. Creating an LLC means you’ll have considerably less paperwork to complete.
  • Credibility. Forming an LLC provides your business with more credibility.

2. Reorganize and Declutter Your Home

One of the best ways to boost your physical and mental health is by creating a healthy home environment. Examine your home and decide which items to sell or throw into the bin. A straightforward decluttering process can free your mind from stress and tension. At the same time, try to bring more light into your house. You can do this by adding windows and artificial light, or moving furniture and changing your home’s layout.

3. Seek Mental Health Support

More and more Americans are using therapy to overcome mental health issues. However, some Americans struggle to find the time to visit a therapist. Did you know you can seek excellent mental health therapy from the comfort of your home?

Online mental health services have been booming since the COVID-19 pandemic. They offer affordable, high-quality mental health therapy from your computer or mobile device. Many online therapy companies provide a free consolation to judge whether it’s right for you. Your online therapist can also help you find the best antidepressant medications, which can be filled and picked up at a local pharmacy.

4. Take Walks or Go on Hikes

One of the easiest ways to introduce physical activity into your day is by going for a walk. Heading outside for a quick walk around the block, or even a stroll around a nearby park, can do wonders for your body. You can even recruit friends and family to join you. This can help keep you and your co-walkers create a routine and keep yourselves accountable for sticking to it.

Of course, if you prefer working out within local nature, there are many superb hiking trails near Island Falls, Maine, where the Sewall House Yoga Retreat is located, including trails at Mount Chase and Shin Pond Falls.

5. Join a Yoga or Meditation Club

You need to look after your joints when you become a senior. Therefore, running and lifting weights might not always be the best way to take care of your body. Alternatively, you can engage in yoga and meditation as offered at Sewall House Yoga Retreat. Both activities are far easier on your joints than more physically stressful ones.

Yoga also boosts strength, balance, flexibility, heart health, and sleeping patterns. Meditation is superb for self-awareness, reducing stress, providing mental clarity, and reducing depression.

It’s Never Too Late To Become Healthier

Age is just a number. Use these tips to become healthier in your senior years. Visit Sewall House Yoga Retreat for help with improving your mental and physical health.
