Sewall House is a Wellness Retreat in the Healing Environment of Northern Maine
When Sewall House opened as a wellness retreat in 1997 with the tagline “Simplicity in a Complex World” we didn’t know about websites and email. We only knew that life can seem complicated at times. Since then, the now-digital world has become even more complex, but Sewall House, with its rural location in Island Falls, Maine, continues to offer ways for our guests to simplify and calm their lives.
Here are 5 things Sewall House in Island Falls, Maine, offers that you may not find at other wellness retreats.
1. We Provide Yoga at Your Level and on Your Schedule
In 1997, Sewall House offered only Kundalini Yoga. In 2003 we added Hatha/Vinyasa Yoga. Since then we have evolved to offer a wide range of yoga practices, as well as healing sessions. This allows our small, boutique experience to be personalized, meeting our guests where their bodies, minds, and spirits are at the present moment.
The Sewall House teaching staff currently offers yoga forms ranging from the more active Ashtanga Iyengar Dharmamittra style to slower forms like Yin, Restorative, Nidra, and Svaroopa. We also offer our guests various meditation techniques, including breathing (pranayama), chanting, and eye variations that focus the mind and brain.
Our daily wellness retreat schedule is ongoing, so you can design your personal wellness retreat for whatever length you desire. We highly recommend five to seven nights to truly leave the world behind.
2. We Offer a Naturally Healing Environment
Sewall House, built in 1865 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, was founded based on its history, which included the healing of a young Harvard student who came to Sewall House to learn more about nature in the 1870s. This young man, who had aspired to become a Naturalist and went on the become President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, developed lifelong friendships at Sewall House.
Part of the magic of Sewall House is the fact that much of the nature experienced by the young Theodore Roosevelt still exists today. Island Falls, Maine, where Sewall House is located, is far from the tourist crowds. The nearby, pristine lakes, rivers, and trails offer our guests many therapeutic, healing experiences. Horseback riding, biking, and kayaking are just a few of the local activities available. Inside Sewall House we offer a sauna, massage services, and a one-person jacuzzi.
3. All Guest Rooms are Private
Each guest at our wellness retreat receives a private room for introspection and rest. We never book strangers in the same room, though couples, friends, and family may choose to share the bed which is offered in each of our six guest bedrooms, two of which have a private bath.
4. We are a Vegetarian, Alcohol-Free, and Drug-Free Environment
The food at Sewall House is tasty and healthy. We serve no meat and offer the wonderful alternatives available in a healthier way of eating, using delicious spices and herbs, as well as many locally sourced foods.
Sewall House also offers an alcohol- and drug-free environment, which gives guests an opportunity to clear and cleanse while with us. We accommodate special needs like vegan and gluten-free for a nominal fee.
5. Our Pets Offer Love and Hugs
If you love animals, Sewall House has a small pet clan to offer further love and hugs. We take special care for those who are allergic, offering pet-free yoga blankets and using hypoallergenic cleaning tools.

At Sewall House we do all we can to make your wellness retreat with us a transformational time of learning and self-growth. Let us support you through a few days of your busy life.
